Traditional slow boats have a capacity of about 40 pax. They regularly sail between Houei Xai and Luang Prabang and trips can be organized to visit Pak Ou caves from Luang Prabang (privatization of the boat).
Mainly made of teak and rosewood, the Shompoo boat is used for trips between Houei Xai - Pakbeng - Luang Prabang. Its maximum capacity is 40 pax with 10 tables. There are no glass windows but there is a plastic side cover in case of rain. The boat offers professional and high quality services in comparison with other boats. On board, there is space for walking. The toilet is clean and on boat there are magazines, books, tea and coffee

Private speed boats have a maximum capacity of 4 passengers (2 quality anchors). It can be operated for all or part of the trip Houei Xai – Pak Beng and Pak Beng – Houei Xai. It is an alternative when the water level is too low or the time too short (to reach the following step before dark falls). However, speed boats are less comfortable than traditional slow boats.
Pak Ou 2 is one of the three boats belonging to the Luang Say Mekong Cruises company. This boat sails between Houei Xai and Luang Prabang with a night at Luang Say Lodge. Launched in October 1999, its steel framework and wooden interior make it solid and comfortable. This boat can hold up to 46 passengers.
