Spreading across the northeast of Champasak Province into the southeasternSalavan, Sekong and Attapeu provinces, the fertile Bolaven Plateau (known in Lao as PhuPhiengBolaven) has an altitude ranging between 3380 and 4430 feet. It is famous for its comfortable climate, magnificent waterfalls, fertile soil and wonderful coffee plantations. This is also one of the best places in Laos to try elephant riding.
The best time to visit the Plateau is around early November to late December - but be prepared for cool evening and mornings; at this time of year, the monsoon has finished but the rivers, creeks and waterfalls are still flowing really well, and the countryside is still very lush. In July, August and September, the heavy rain prevents access to many sites.
There are many packages which are suitable to your taste and your time: 1 day, 2 days 1 night and 3 days 2 nights and even a special 7 days 6 nights package. You will have further opportunity to see, observe and learn about the mysterious pachyderm at the museum and at the mahout school.
We recommend two packages for this activity: 2days/1night and 3days/2nights. It would be different according to the program and activities you would prefer but the common point is that you will share unforgettable experiences with the elephants and their Mahout, alternate leisure activities combined with intense emotional moments.
Good place for elephant riding in the area is PhouAsa, located nearby Ban KhietNgong and Kingfisher Ecolodge. The luxury resort Tad Lo Lodge is also a very good choice – it is home to three elephants, who can take visitors on a 60-90-minute rides.
You can also combine elephant riding and motorbike driving or cycling. However, be prepare of difficulties it might have if you travel during rainy season.
