The hotel is situated on the Mekong river street and in the historical centre of the peninsula close by the temples Wat Nong and Wat Sensai. From there it is just a short walk to the main road and to the Luang Prabang night market. The Shangri Lao is located 24 km outside and just 3 km downstream from Xieng Lom village, Luang Prabang and near Tasea waterfall. The Shangri Lao is the new luxury camp located in the heart of the primary jungle of the Huay Khot valley not too far from Luang Prabang center. The residence of a branch of the Lao royal family it was the childhood home of Prince Souphanouvong, the resistance leader known as the “Red Prince”, and from 1975 the first president of the Lao PDR. The building, now a heritage protected property, was sensitively renovated by Madame Lamphoune Voravongsa and opened as a private hotel in 2002. Then in 2008 six more colonial style buildings consisting of 15 Deluxe rooms, 7 Junior suites and 3 Satri House suites were added to the existing structures.
